How to Download YouTube Videos on iPhone Without an App
YouTube Premium lets you save videos for offline viewing, but only inside the YouTube app — you can't get the actual video file, and the moment your subscription lapses those downloads disappear. If you want a real MP4 on your iPhone that you own and can play in any app, you'll want a different approach.
You can do it from Safari, with no app to install. Here's how.
The quick version
- Copy the video's link from the YouTube app (Share → Copy Link).
- Open Video Saver App in Safari and paste it.
- Tap Get Info, pick a quality (up to 4K), and tap Download.
- Save the MP4 to your Files or Photos.
Step 1 — Get the video link
In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video, then Copy Link. If you're on YouTube in a browser, copy the URL from the address bar. Both Shorts and regular videos work.
Step 2 — Paste and choose your quality
Open our YouTube Downloader in Safari and paste the link. Tap Get Info.
You'll see the video preview and a list of quality options. For most phones, 1080p is the sweet spot — crisp and not too large. If the video was uploaded in 4K and you want maximum quality, you can choose 4K (2160p) instead.
Step 3 — Download and save
Tap Download. The file saves to your iPhone as an MP4 — the most compatible format, which plays in Photos, Files, and any video player.
To add it to your Camera Roll: open the file, tap Share → Save Video.
HD, 4K and frame rate
Video Saver App downloads the best available stream and merges the video and audio into a single MP4 without re-encoding, so there's no quality loss. If the original was 60fps, your download keeps 60fps too.
Want just the audio (for a podcast or music)? That's on our roadmap — for now, download the video and extract audio with any free tool.
Is this allowed?
Downloading a YouTube video for your own personal, offline use is generally accepted. What's not okay is re-uploading it, redistributing it, or using copyrighted content commercially without permission. When in doubt, only download your own videos or content that's clearly licensed for reuse. Our Terms of Use cover the details.
Common questions
Can I download age-restricted videos? Public videos download freely. Age-restricted ones require a signed-in session on the server, so they may not always work.
Why is the download taking a while? 4K files are large. If speed matters more than resolution, pick 1080p or 720p.
The video won't play after downloading. See our quick fix guide: why your downloaded video won't play.
